Like concrete manipulatives, these digital tools can be used to explore a variety of mathematical concepts. Students need to bring their own problems to explore.
Newer tools have a pencil icon which allows for students to annotate their solution.
One way for students to share their work is for them to take a screenshot of their work to share with their teacher or add to their portfolio.
The Notepad Tool can be used to import images from older tools for the purpose of annotating them.
There are instructions for some methods of sharing work available.

Newer Tools also support Image Import, Keyboard Shortcuts and File Operations.

This document outlines some common features of mathies tools and how they support student learning.

Basic - perform simple calculations including square roots and percentage.
Scientific - standard trig, log and power buttons as well as unit conversions and a variety of constants
Graphing - explore transformations of functions by creating an equation using parameters then changing their values to see how the equation is affected. Up to three functions can be graphed.
Fraction Strips - represent fractions by dragging pieces from the fraction tower into the workspace. Pieces can be placed in a line to form a train. Manipulate the pieces and trains to compare and order fractions or to model fraction operations.

Colour Tiles - Represent numbers, ratios and percents. Explore patterns and measurement. Create geometric designs. Users can change colours, create mirror images, rotate, and clone selections.
Money - represent various money amounts using realistic images of Canadian coins and bills.
Notepad - write solutions, sketch diagrams, create graphs and record your mathematical thinking using one of four backgrounds (grid, isometric dot, lined, blank)
Number Line Tool - represent whole numbers and integers using magnitude bars, vectors, number ribbons or hops. Model various operations.

Pattern Blocks - a virtual manipulative made up of an unlimited number of triangles, hexagons and other shapes that can be placed, rotated and manipulated in a workspace to model patterns, show number operations or represent fractions.

Pouring Containers - virtual representations of various containers that can be filled to represent fractions; pour the contents to model various operations.
Rekenrek - arithmetic racks used to build understanding of whole numbers, number relationships and reasoning for various operations.
Each rod has ten bead, five of one colour followed by five of another colour.
Relational Rods+ - represent, compare, order, and operate on whole numbers, fractions or decimals by dragging rods from the tower into the work space and manipulating

Relational Rods+** includes:
  • Relational Rods plus
  • Whole Number Rods plus
  • Decimal Number Rods

Note: Relational Rods+ replaces earlier versions of Relational Rods and Whole Number Rods.

Set Tool - Sets of objects can be generated randomly or designed by the user. Sort and classify objects. Create patterns. Represent, compose and decompose whole numbers, tenths, and fractions. Explore experimental probability.

Users can:
  • organize objects using five frames(as of V 2.0.0), ten frames or frames of tenths
  • scramble objects in the workspace
  • create new sets while conserving count and the selected attribute options
